"God blesses those who realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is given to them." (Mat 5:3 NLT)

Traditional spirituality can be debilitating. The Bible did not say that "God blesses the poor just because they are poor." But as it turned out, people have this idea that it is spiritual to be poor. And so it became: the poorer you are, the more spiritual you are.

No, that is just not true. What Jesus taught was about being "poor in spirit." It is recognition of our need for God, our spirits crying out to God's Spirit. However, for the financially poor, they will be blessed when they give. The poor will remain poor and destitute until they learn to plant their seed.

There is also a traditional prayer line that goes, "Please bless those who cannot give." But how can God bless financially those who do not give? God blesses the giver. Those who claim that they have nothing to give are shouting at God's face that He is a liar - that He does not give seed to sow.

We all have something to sow to break the chain of poverty. It may not be money at first, but we can serve. We may give the investment of time or a volunteer work. And God is faithful to give seed to the sower.
