"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” (Luke 4:18-19 NIV)

What is the good news to the poor? For them, the good news that matters to their everyday lives is that ‘they don’t have to be poor anymore.’

The Bible teaches that the poor are captives. They need freedom from the prison of poverty. They need to see the goodness of God for they are being continually blinded by the darkness of destitution. They need to be delivered from the crushing burden of debt and repossession.

They need to hear the Gospel that this year is the year of the Lord’s favor upon their lives. There is always hope in God.
